The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mesophyllum engelhartii (Foslie) W.H.Adey

Type locality: Cape Jaffa, South Australia, Australia (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 349). Lectotype: [A. Engelhart]; 1900; no habitat data on type. TRH B18-2595 (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 349). Notes: Wilks & Woelkerling note: Collector not indicated but likely to be August Engelhart; date not indicated; designated by Adey in Adey & Lebednik (1967: 69). Holotype: TRH, unnumbered (Riosmena-Rodriguez & Vásques-Elizondo 2012).
