Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Tolypiocladia glomerulata (C.Agardh) F.Schmitz.

Lectotype locality: Ryukyu Islands ; (Masuda & al. 1995: 196, fig. 22) Lectotype: C. Wright; TCD; (Masuda & al. 1995: 196, fig. 22) Notes: Syntype localities: "Loo Choo Islands, and Tanegasima, Japan, south of Kiu-siu." (Harvey, 1860: 330).
