The type species (holotype) of the genus Polycavernosa is Polycavernosa fastigiata C.F.Chang & B.M.Xia.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilaria subtilis (B.M.Xia & I.A.Abbott) B.M.Xia & I.A.Abbott.

Holotype locality: Middle Bank, Pinang, Malaysia; (Xia & Abbott 1987: 414) Holotype (cystocarpic): 4 July 1984; growing on lines at pilot farm (algal); BISH; Doty #32423 (Xia & Abbott 1987: 414) Notes: Isotyopes at AST and BISH.
