The type species (holotype) of the genus Gymnogongrus is Gymnogongrus griffithsiae (Turner) C.Martius.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Yonagunia ligulata (Harvey ex Kützing) Manghisi, M.Morabito, De Clerck & Le Gall.

Type locality: Sri Lanka; (Silva & al. 1996: 203) Lectotype: MEL; 504575 (Manghisi et al. 2015: 463, fig. 1) Notes: collector: Harvey; Sonder Herb. (INA). Fort Dauphin, plage Monseigneur, Madagascar (Manghisi et al., 2015: table 2).

Adjective (Latin), ligulate (Stearn 1973).
