Type locality: Cape Comorin, Tamil Nadu, India (Silva & al. 1996: 428). Type: PC? herb. Bory (Yoshida 1998: 938).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), resembling the mosses, specifically the genus Hypnum (Neal 1993).

John et al. (2004) cite Spyridia aculeata (Schimper) Kütz. and S. armata Kütz. as synonyms of this species.
John et al. (2003) do not distinguish between Spyridia hypnoides (Bory) Papenfuss and f. inermis (Børgesen) G.W. Lawson & D.M. John when presenting distributions and it is assumed that the records are the same as those in Lawson & John (1987).
