Type locality: Cape Comorin, Tamil Nadu, India (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 428). Type: PC? herb. Bory (Yoshida 1998: 938).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), resembling the mosses, specifically the genus Hypnum (Neal 1993).

“We have for now placed all records of S. filamentosa from São Tomé under S. hypnoides until such time as the material on which they are based is re-examined and the original determination verified.” (Lawson & John, 1987)
John et al. (2004) cite Spyridia aculeata (Schimper) Kütz. and S. armata Kütz. as synonyms of this species.
John et al. (2003) do not distinguish between Spyridia hypnoides (Bory) Papenfuss and f. inermis (Børgesen) G.W. Lawson & D.M. John when presenting distributions and it is assumed that the records are the same as those in Lawson & John (1987).
