Taxonomic notes
According to Silva et al. (1996) this taxon apparently lies within the circumscription of Mesophyllum erubescens but has not yet been transferred or reduced to synonmy. Athanasiadis & Ballantine (2014: Appendix 2: no page number) comment "The presence of a coaxial hypothallium in the specimens supports a position in Mesophyllum s.s. or Melyvonnea, but the occurrence of flared epithallial cells (occasionally developed in sequence) indicates an affiliation with Lithothamnion. As, we have been unable to observe the type of pore cells in multiporate roofs, we cannot presently refer this taxon to a particular genus. Ballesteros and Afonso-Carrillo (1995, fig. 11) reported and illustrated Mesophyllum erubescens from Mauritius, and their single illustration shows a rhodolith with thin protuberances matching those of L. erubescens f. haingsisianum."

General environment
This is a marine species.
