Lectotype locality: nordsiden af [=north side of] Siambugten [= Gulf of Siam, now the Gulf of Thailand], Thailand (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 318). Lectotype: Schmidt; 7.iii.1900; encrusting on a coral reef. TRH B15-2377 (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 318).

Adjective (Latin), purplish, becoming purple (Stearn 1973).
