Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Lithophyllum is Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chamberlainium impar (Foslie) Puckree-Padua, P.W.Gabrielson & Maneveldt

Type information
Holotype locality: Natal or between Natal and the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa (Chamberlain 1994: 153). Holotype: A. Weber-van Bosse; 1893; TRH A3-146 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 40). Notes: Chamberlain (1994: 153) notes that as indicated on the specimens, there is some doubt as to whether Mme Weber van Bosse collected this material in Natal or Cape Province; the species has never subsequently been observed in Natal, and it is more likely to have been the latter.

No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
