The type species (lectotype) of the genus Lithophyllum is Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spongites yendoi (Foslie) Y.M.Chamberlain.

Type Information
Lectotype locality: Piapis Bay (Teluk Sapira), Waigeo Island, Indonesia; (Silva & al. 1996: 272) Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Verheij & Woelkerling (1992: 280).
