Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterocladia is Pterocladia lucida (R.Brown ex Turner) J.Agardh.

Adjective (Latin), flattened out, usually in one plane (Stearn 1973).

This is a marine species.

Type information
Type locality: Anaheim Landing (south of Long Beach), Orange County, Calif. (Loomis 1960: 4). Holotype: Loomis 5330; July 22, 1934; In beach drift. Private collection of Mrs. Nina Loomis, (contact details are available in original reference) (Dawson 1953: 79). Notes: Dawson (1953: 79) notes isotype preparations are on slides 1187-1188 in HAHF.
