Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type Information
Type locality: Point Hughes, Cabo San Lazaro, Baja California; (Taylor 1945: 89, 90) Holotype: W.R. Taylor, No. 34-598; 7 Mar. 1934; Intertidal; Hancock Foundation; (Taylor 1945: 90) Notes: De Clerck (2003) gives the following data: Holotype: AHFH in LAM Taylor No. 34-598. He notes that, according to Dawson (1950: 92), the type specimen of D. concrescens, a juvenile and sterile plant, resembles D. vivesii [=D. dichotoma (Hudson) Lamouroux]. Until more material has been collected at the type locality this species remains doubtful.
