The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

Type Information
Type locality: not stated; (Dixon & Price 1981: 135) (Dixon & Price 1981: 135) Notes: Comments: Roth(1800) compared his alga with Conferva marina nodosa of Dillenius (1741), the type of Conferva purpurascens Hudson, and in a later treatment (Roth,1806: 147) actually cited the latter in his treatment of Ceramium fruitculosum. Wulfen (1803) independently described Conferva fruiticulosa (q.v.), and it is probable that the two entities are based on fragments of the original gathering.
