The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Type locality: Empalme, near Guaymas, Sonora (Dawson 1944: 330). Not specified: D. & R. 3426a; 23 December 1939; (Dawson 1944: 330). Notes: Dawson (1944: 330) notes that the type specimen was found drifting along southeastern shore of bay.
