The type species (lectotype) of the genus Protococcus is Protococcus kermesinus (Wrangel) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chlorococcum infusionum (Schrank) Meneghini.

Type Information
Type locality: [München, Germany?]; (Schrank 1794: 1) Notes: "Lepra infusionum, viridis, glomerulata, in pelliculam continuara punctatam concrescens." He discovered the growths after immersing some willow-twigs in water and keeping them in a window in his bedroom: "After about 14 days the water atarted to assume a greenish color, which gradually became more and more complete...". Perhaps one of earliest examples of culture of green algae? Franz von Paula Schrank (August 21, 1747, Vornbach – December 22, 1835) was a German priest, botanist and entomologist. He was the first director of the botanical gardens in Munich from 1809 to 1832.
