The type species (holotype) of the genus Semnocarpa is Semnocarpa corynephora (J.Agardh) Huisman, Foard & Kraft.

Adjective (Latin), very small, minute (Stearn 1973).

General environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Epiphytic , either on stems of the sea grass Amphibolis antarctica, or on various green and red algae (Huisman et al, 1993: 150). Described as epiphytic on Rhodopeltis, Amphibolis, Halimeda and Hennedya, and apparently occurs on several firm-surfaced red algae (Womersley 1996: 46).

Type locality: Green Island, adjacent to Rottnest Island, Western Australia (Huisman, Foard & Kraft 1993: 148). Holotype: Kraft & Huisman; 3 October 1990; Epiphytic onRhodopeltis borealis. MELU A40100 (Womersley 1996: 144).
