Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Micrasterias is Micrasterias furcata C.Agardh ex Ralfs.

Nomenclatural notes
Although accepted by many authors as having been published by Ralfs in 1845 in Jenner's Flora of Tunbridge Wells , p. 198, the introduction of the name Micrasterias oscitans was not accompanied by a description at this time. The species epithet was first validly published by Hassal (1845: 386, pl. 90. fig. ) as Holocystis oscitans Hassal.
