The type species (holotype) of the genus Phacus is Phacus longicauda (Ehrenberg) Dujardin.

Type locality: Western New York, USA (Index Nominum Algarum). Holotype: Stokes 1885, fig. 2: fig. 3l (Lukomska-Kowalczyk et al., 2020: 1143) (epitype) shallow ponds. (Schneider et al. 2015: 1143). Notes: GenBank MN149556.
