The type species (lectotype) of the genus Trachelomonas is Trachelomonas volvocina (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Strombomonas acuminata var. amphora (Playfair) Deflandre.

Origin of Species Name
Participle A (Latin), acuminate, i.e. tapering gradually or abruptly from inwardly curved sides into a narrow point (Stearn 1973).
