The type species (holotype) of the genus Griffithsia is Griffithsia corallina C.Agardh.

Adjective (Latin), oval, elliptical, i.e., broadest at the middle, the sides curved and length:breadth generally 2:1 (Stearn 1973).

Type locality: King George Sound, Western Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 412). Lectotype: Harvey; TCD Harvey, Trav. set no. 41 (Womersley 1998: 332). Notes: Dawson (1962: 72) notes that the type specimen was epiphytic on Zostera.
