Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cymbella is Cymbella cymbiformis C.Agardh.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: Falaise (Tuji 2007: 49). Lectotype: an illustration of a frustule in Kützing (1844: pl. 6, fig. XV, the 3rd fig. from the left: an individual in slide BM18530 (fig. 9) (epitype) (Tuji 2007: 49, 50 fig. 1). Notes: Falaise : De Brébisson (Herb. Binder); Schleswig: Herb. Binder. Central Amerika? Fossil in schwedischem Bergmehl. (INA). Type locality: France: Falaise; Germany: Schleswig; Central America; Sweden (INA). Isoepitype (raw material): Kützing packet 333 (Tuji, 2007: 50). According to Blanco (2016: 109, 110), the specimens in two collections cited by Kützing are syntypes and syntypes have priority over illustrations.
