The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chamaepinnularia mediocris (Krasske) Lange-Bertalot.

Type locality: Austria: Hohen Tauern, Dolomite Alps; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Tauern region , Alps (Germany) (Wetzel et al. 2013).
