The type species (holotype) of the genus Mallomonas is Mallomonas ploesslii Perty.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mallomonas caudata Iwanoff [Ivanov].

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1973).
