The type species (holotype) of the genus Phacus is Phacus longicauda (Ehrenberg) Dujardin.

Type locality: Latvia: Riga (Index Nominum Algarum). Lectotype: fig. 42, pl. 2 in Skvortzov 1928: Epitype: fig. 1, j-l (cells in resin, for EM from strain ACOI 1312), Warsaw (epitype) (Karnkowska-Ishikawa et al. 2010: 178). Notes: Lukomska-Kowalczyk et al. (2020: 1149) note that the epitypification statment published in Karnkowska-Ishikawa et al. 2020 (p. 178) does not include the phrase "designated here". They designate the epitype: Karnkowska-Ishikawa et al. 2010, fig. 1j in their 2020 publication.DNA sequence: FJ597146.
