Taxonomic notes
Moestrup & Calado (2018: 85) note "... the unusual type of resting cyst indicates that the species does not belong in Gymnodinium or, since cysts and motile cells are known only from wild samples, that the cyst described does not belong in the life cycle of G. chiastosporum. Studies based on pure cultures are needed." and "Tetradinium chiastosporum var. armatum Wawrik (1981) is a related form, which differs in the motile cells possessing an eyespot, the resting spore having additional spines and in occurring during ice break in Steinbruchlacke, a pond in Waldviertel, Lower Austria. It needs to be examined in detail." - (16 Oct 2018) - M.D. Guiry
