The type species (lectotype) of the genus Achnanthes is Achnanthes adnata Bory.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Achnanthes conspicua Ant.Mayer.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), with leaflets arranged on each side of a common petiole.
