Type locality: Austria: Neuseidler See; Notes: Lectotype slide #175(177.181.187)284 Neusiedler See, Grunow collection Vienna (designated in Sterrenburg 1997). Epitypes Sterrenburg #389, BM 81867, also in BRM and ANSP.

Origin of Species Name
Noun (Latin), of Lake Peiso [Peiso Lacus; Neusiedler See; Lake Neusiedl - Austria, Hungary]; "Peiso" is treated as a third-decelension noun, the genitive case of would be "peisonis".

General Environment
This is a brackish species.

Description
Valve slightly sigmoid, linear-lanceolate with fairly obtuse ends, 65-125 µm long, 8-13 µm wide. Raphe sternum with slight to moderate double curvature, raphe angle +4 to 0°, clearly eccentric near the ends. Central area fairly large, oval, symmetric. Central raphe fissures oppositely deflected dimorphic crooks. Terminal areas small funnels in semilateral position. A segment of apical microforamina runs around the apex (SEM). Striae transverse 21-23 in 10 µm, longitudinal clearly finer, 25-28 in 10 µm.

Habitat
Fresh to clearly brackish waters including estuaries and saline inland lakes. Personally observed (Sterrenburg) in Europe and the USA but probably much more widespread.
