Type Information
Type locality: Poland: near Strzelin; (Index Nominum Algarum) Type: Hilse; iii.1860; (Index Nominum Algarum)

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.

Description
Smaller valves broadly elliptical to linear-elliptical in larger valves, with convex margins and broadly rounded, non-protracted valve ends. Valve length 12-–20 µm, breadth 7.0–-7.5 µm. Axial area narrow, linear, slightly widening towards the central area The central area forms a rectangular to weakly wedge-shaped stauros bordered by one row of small, rounded areolae. One circular stigma is present, usually isolated but sometimes at the end of a short series of areolae. Raphe branches weakly curved with deflected central raphe endings and elongated terminal fissures, continuing onto the valve mantle. Transapical striae radiate in the middle to strongly radiate towards the apices, 20-–22 in 10 µm, composed of two to five small, rounded areolae. Areolae slightly transapically elongated near the valve margins.

Similar Species
Apart from a significantly higher number of striae in 10 µm (15-–20 vs 20–-22), based on the observed features, these valves clearly belong to Luticola cohnii. The species is often misidentified as Luticola mutica, which explains probably the much higher number of records of the latter in the (sub-)Antarctic region (Kellogg & Kellogg 2002). Both species can be separated by differences in the raphe structure (Lange-Bertalot & Bonik 1978). Luticola mutica has typical hooked and quite elongated central endings; whereas, L. cohnii only has short deflected ones. Other taxa such as Luticola muticoides (Hustedt) Mann differ sufficiently to avoid confusion.
