The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassal.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Grunowia solgensis (A.Cleve) Aboal.

Delogne in Antwerp, VIl-19-C5, Coll. G. 929, 'det. Grunow' (no further slide exists in the Grunow Coll. in Vienna)." (Lange-Bertalot 1980: 54).

Adjective (Latin), sinuate, strongly waved (Stearn 1973).
