Combination proposed by De Toni on 25 July 1889 and by Hariot (Journal de Botanique, vol. 3: 288) on 1 September 1889 (fide Index Nominum Algarum).
"Apart from tropical ecosystems P. arundinacea was found also in temperate regions with cold and wet climate without frosts [Ireland (Scannel 1978, Rindi & Guiry 2002)]. However, their observations differ from tropical specimens depicted in Thompson & Wujek (1997) mainly in cell dimensions, W:L ratio of the vegetative cells and structure of the sporangiophore. Rindi & Guiry (2002) found the sporangiatelaterals growing up always directly from vegetative cells. No stalk cells were observed. On the other [hand], Thompson & Wujek ( 1997) found sporangiophores up to several cells on their material. Our specimens correspond ... with Thompson & Wujek's observations. Thus, the splitting of tropical and temperate populations classified recently into P. arundinacea in two separate species is possible in the future." (Neustupa 2003: 492). Additionally, Montagne originally described this species as growing epiphytically on reeds, suggesting perhaps a third species. - (2 Sep 2016) - M.D. Guiry
In damp, shaded habitats where high humidity and shelter from direct sunlight occur for most of the time; most common in woodlands and north-facing sides of ditches. In these environments it forms orange patches on leaves of angiosperms (Hedera, Rubus, Ilex, Buxus, Laurus, Myrtus) and ferns (Asplenium, Blechnum, Ceterach, Dryopteris, Phyllitis, Pteridium). - (20 Mar 2018) - M.D. Guiry
