The type species (type conserved) of the genus Rhodochorton is Rhodochorton purpureum (Lightfoot) Rosenvinge.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Audouinella hermannii (Roth) Duby.

Type locality: Germany: Nordhausen; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Following data given by Necchi & Zucchi (1995: 211): Scotland, Aberdeen, vii.1844, Kützing collection 960, L 940265 and they note that a lectotype was designated by Necci et al., 1993.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), violet, refers to the blue-red colours nearer blue (Stearn 1973).
