Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laurencia is Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Distributional notes
Introduced into northern France (see Cabioch et al., 1990), probably via aquaculture operations. According to Huisman (2000) this species is distributed throughout Australia, but is rarely encountered in southern waters.

General environment
This is a marine species.

Widespread in tropical and subtropical waters (Womersley 2003: 480).

Type locality: "Hab. in mari Indiae occid.; ex Martinique a Brongniart missa (Hb. Agardh)." [Martinique, West Indies] (Agardh 1841: 20). Holotype: LD herb. alg. Agardh 37257 (Womersley 2003: 480). Notes: Isotype in PC.
