The type species (lectotype) of the genus Coscinodiscus is Coscinodiscus argus Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Actinocyclus octonarius var. ralfsii (W.Smith) Hendey.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), a sombre brown, but often used to indicate darkness of colour (Stearn 1973).
