Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Halimeda is Halimeda tuna (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: "Kamtschatka" (Decaisne 1842: 102). Notes: As Kamchatka is not likely to be a source for the type material, its true provenance is unkown. (See Hillis, 1959: 353; Hillis-Colinvaux, 1980: 138; Lipkin & Silva, 2002: 68).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), discoid.

Heterotypic Synonym(s)
Halimeda discoidea var. platyloba Børgesen 1911

Distributional notes
The type locality is stated to be 'Kamtschatka', an area that would be far too cold to support this tropical and subtropical species.

Habitat notes
Widespread in all warm seas. In Chondrophycus papillosus community on rock flat, ca. 20cm below low water; with many epiphytes, especially on lower, older parts (Lipkin & Silva 2002). - (23 Jun 2010) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.
