The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Craspedopleura kryophila (Cleve) M.Poulin.

Type locality: Russia: eastern Siberia: Cape Wankarema [Vankarem]; (Index Nominum Algarum) Lectotype: P.T. Cleve Collection, Vega Exp., S 510: S; (Poulin 1993: 224, figs 2-5) Notes: in sea ice near Cape Vankarem, Russia (Poulin, 1993). Isolectotype specimens: figs 6, 7 (Poulin, 1993). Collector: F.R. Kjellman (INA).
