Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Elachista is Elachista scutellata Duby.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Elachista nigra Takamatsu.

Type Information
Type locality: Tappi, Aomori Prefecture, Japan; (Silva & al. 1996: 622) Type: T.O. Pr. 133 (Niigata University); (Lee 2000: 15) Notes: Lee (2000: 15) cites Aomori, Japan (growing on Ecklonia stolonifera Okamura in January) as the type locality of this species. According to Womersley (1987: 78), the type was collected by Ohta (Ohta 133) on 1 January 1970.

Adjective (Latin), orbicular (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Korean plants epiphytic on E. cava and E. bicyclis (Lee 2000: 15). Womersley (1987: 78) notes that this may be an introduction to Australia from Japan, where it grows on Undaria; in Australia it is common throughout the year on Ecklonia.
