Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Surirella is Surirella striatula Turpin.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Campylodiscus neofastuosus Ruck & Nakov

Navicula fastuosa Ehrenberg

Type information
Type locality: Ad insulam nomine Tjorn in mari boreali [Tjörn I., Bohuslän, Sweden] (Index Nominum Algarum: 214). Notes: Watanabe (2012: 1266) could not find any Surirella species on the Tjorn disks in the Ehrenberg collection, Berlin. The original material from which the disks were made was collected by Mr. Eckstrom of Gothenburg, sent to Berlin via Mr. Berzelius (Ehrenberg 1841), and recorded in "Clara's index (Lazarus and Jahn 1998) with index no. 2318. However, the material is not present today. Ehrenberg made several drawings under the name of Navicula (Surirella) fastuosa, but the specimens illustrated were not from Tjorn. A neotype will be necessary for this species and a formal taxonomic proposal will be made in a subsequent paper (in preparation) (Watanabe et al., 2012: 1266).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), proud.

Heterotypic Synonym(s)
Surirella fastuosa var. genuina A.Cleve 1952

Nomenclatural notes
According to Watanabe (2012: 1266), Ehrenberg (1840) initially described this taxon as Navicula fastuosa from Tjorn, Sweden without illustration, but later (Ehrenberg 1843) published drawings showing both hetero- and isopolar valves. The localities of these specimens were different from that of the type and the identity of S. fastuosa remains to be determined. - (29 Jan 2013) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.
