This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Tripodiscus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Aulacodiscus argus (Ehrenberg) A.W.F.Schmidt
Type locality: lebend bei Cuxhavem im Nordseewasser (Index Nominum Algarum).
Origin of species name
Noun (Latinised), Latinised form of the Greek, argos, white; the hundred-eyed keeper of Io, killed by Mercury at the command of Jupiter (Smith & Lockwood 1933).
