The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type Information
Type locality: Matsumae, Hokkaido, Japan; (De Clerck 2003: 178) Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that Dictyota virellus is not validly published since Noda did not indicate a type specimen (Yoshida 1998: 211).
