The type species (holotype) of the genus Antithamnion is Antithamnion cruciatum (C.Agardh) Nägeli.

Type locality: Minnesota Seaside Station, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada (Gardner 1927: 409). Type: E. Butler & J. Polley, Phyc. Bor.-Amer. 944 ; on Lessoniopsis littoralis. UC 807955 (Wollaston 1972: 83).
