The type species (holotype) of the genus Padina is Padina pavonica (Linnaeus) Thivy.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Padina gymnospora (Kützing) Sonder
Origin of species name
Adjective A (Latin), thick (Stearn 1973).
