This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Thalassiosira hyperborea var. septentrionalis (Grunow) G.R.Hasle
Type locality: USSR: Franz Josef Land (Index Nominum Algarum). Lectotype: W 2247c (slide referred to on Grunow's Bilder-Sammlung No. 8862 as having beeen used for Grunow 1184, pl. 4, fig. 33) (Hasle & Lange 1989: 127).
