The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphiroa beauvoisii J.V.Lamouroux
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), zoned, banded, marked circularly (Stearn 1973).
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
Harvey et al. (2009: 269) note that synonymy proposed by Norris & Johansen (1981: 6, 12); more recently considered a synonym by Riosmena-Rodrigues & Siqueiros-Beltrones (1996: 137) and Moura & Guimarães (2005: 21). Type locality: Not specified, "Misaki, Shimoda and Sunosaki" are listed (Norris & Johansen 1981: 6). Lectotype: Yendo's illustrations: (Norris & Johansen 1981: 6). Notes: Dawson (1953: 146) Type locality not specifically designated but the Japanese localities of Misaki, Shimoda and Sunosaki indicated.
Africa: South Africa (van der Merwe & al. 2015).
