The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphiroa beauvoisii J.V.Lamouroux

Adjective (Latin), zoned, banded, marked circularly (Stearn 1973).

Harvey et al. (2009: 269) note that synonymy proposed by Norris & Johansen (1981: 6, 12); more recently considered a synonym by Riosmena-Rodrigues & Siqueiros-Beltrones (1996: 137) and Moura & Guimarães (2005: 21).
