The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Type information
Type locality: [Royal Sound, south side, one ‘Norwegian mile’ from entrance], Kerguelen (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 316). Lectotype: Gundersen; 1898; no habitat data on type. TRH B15-2364 (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 316).
