The type species (lectotype) of the genus Euastrum is Euastrum ansatum Ehrenberg ex Ralfs.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Euastrum biverrucosum A.A.Gontcharov & M.M.Watanabe.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latinised), in honour of H. Adolph Engler (1844-1930) (Stearn 1992).
