Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilaria vermiculophylla (Ohmi) Papenfuss.

Type Information
Type locality: Qingdao, Shandong Prov., Cina; (Zhang & Xia 1985: 175, 197) Notes: Type is "AST 93-55 (female)" but the herbarium abbreviation for this Chinese herbarium (Quingdao) is not AST (Birmingham).
