Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Melobesia is Melobesia membranacea (Esper) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lithophyllum tortuosum f. crassa (Lloyd) Hauck.

Type locality: Ile d'Yeu (Vendée), France; (Woelkerling 1998: 370) Lectotype: collector not indicated; September 1852; PC; Lloyd (Algues de l'Ouest de la France, no. 318), Thuret-Burnet Herbarium (algal fascicle 132, filed under Goniolithon) (Woelkerling 1998: 370) Notes: Isolectotypes: PC, (Algues de l'Ouest de la France, no. 318), General Herbarium (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet affixed to a herbarium sheet); two isolectotypes are present.

Adjective A (Latin), thick (Stearn 1973).
