The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sabbea adminii (D.Roberts & McMinn) Van de Vijver, J.Bishop & Kopalová.

(2019: 46, SEM figs 21-29): BR-4556 (sample accession 2488, Blue Lake, McMurdo Sound, Antarctic Continent) (Kusber et al., 2020).
