The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Muelleria peraustralis (West & G.S.West) S.A.Spaulding & F.R.Stoermer.
Type Information
Type locality: Cape Royds, Ross Island, Antarctica; (West & West 1911: 284) Lectotype: subfossil lake deposit; BM; 34127 (Spaulding, Kociolek & Wong 1999: 323, 324) Notes: Because no type was designated when N. peraustralis was first described, Spaulding et al. (1999: 324) designate an isotype slide of Cape Royds, Ross Island, Antarctica (BM 34127) as the lectotype; see also Van De Vijver et al. (2012: 160) who also "designated" the same slide as lectotype.
