The type species (holotype) of the genus Pinnularia is Pinnularia viridis (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pinnularia sterrenburgii var. cuyabenensis (De Oliveira & Steinitz-Kannan) Metzeltin & Lange-Bertalot.

Adjective A (Latin), glassy, hyaline, glassy-green.
