The type species (holotype) of the genus Polycavernosa is Polycavernosa fastigiata C.F.Chang & B.M.Xia.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilaria percurrens (I.A.Abbott) I.A.Abbott.

Fisher; 13 October 1986; growing on polyethylene line; BISH; Abbott 17986 (Abbott 1988: 146) Notes: Holotype: Abbott 17986, a sheet of cystocarpic plants. Isotypes under this number (sporophytes and gametophytes) deposited BISH, AST, US.
